This painting offers a rare moment of comic relief to this morbid moment. Herons were daily visitors to the path, constantly searching for food along the banks of the canal. The image illustrates the irony of the situation; the Irish did not need to starve. The Protestant Irish and British Landowners exported tons of food (grains and livestock) to England every day. Throughout the famine, Guinness continued to use huge amounts of barley and oats to brew stout for exportation to England.
